Best Supermarkets in Colorado Springs

The best supermarkets in Colorado Springs have a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and premium meats. You’ll also find a great selection of organic foods and specialty items.

The new Bread & Butter Neighborhood Market opened this month and is expected to play an essential role in downtown redevelopment. However, it faces challenges ahead.

Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s is a specialty grocery chain with various signature items. They also sell produce, dairy, and beverages (most sell wine and beer).

Earlier this year, the Coloradoan reported that Trader Joe’s would open its first Colorado Springs store at University Village. The chain will operate out of a free-standing building at the site.

The Trader Joe’s store will be similar to the other locations, said Yoko Mochizuki, the retailer’s vice president for Colorado Springs. She said that eighty percent of its offerings would be under the private label.

In the past, Trader Joe’s had been barred from selling alcohol because state laws limited grocery chains to one liquor license per location. However, voters approved Proposition 125 in November, allowing grocery stores to sell wine.

Trader Joe’s will start selling wine at all of its Colorado stores in March, according to a spokesperson for the company. The company also will expand its wine selection to six other locations, including Fort Collins, Boulder, Littleton, and Greenwood Village.

European Marked

The European Market Supermarket is a local gem for those who love artisanal baked goods and international ingredients. This store also has an extensive selection of fresh fish and Asian groceries.

CE marking, a mandatory EU labeling requirement, indicates that a product meets the needs of specific European directives and is deemed eligible for trade in the EEA. The affixing of CE marking on products enables manufacturers and importers to sell their products throughout the 31 participating countries in the EEA.

By affixing the CE mark, a manufacturer states that they have met the EU requirements for safe and sanitary production. The marking is a legal requirement under European law. It allows government officials to withdraw non-conforming products from the market if found in a country within the EEA.

A small neighborhood grocery that opened this month in downtown Colorado Springs, Bread & Butter Neighborhood Market is the brainchild of Steve Poore and Jessica Day. These two young business people have spent years assembling the concept. The 2,000-square-foot store is tiny by supermarket standards, but it can potentially play a significant role in downtown’s growth and development.

Natural Grocers

Since 1955, Natural Grocers has provided affordable organic produce, dietary supplements, body care products, and free nutrition education to help people achieve a healthier lifestyles. The Lakewood, CO-based grocery chain operates 166 stores in 21 states.

In addition to its EDAP Every Day Affordable Price(r), Natural Grocers sells products that are 100 percent USDA Certified Organic and non-GMO, as well as free-range eggs and pasture-based dairy. It also provides nutrition education, cooking demos, and coaching sessions with its nutritional health coaches in each store.

The new South Colorado Springs location will be at 1604 South Nevada Ave and will open on Oct. 26 with a grand re-opening celebration.

The re-opening will feature free events, including a health fair, food tastings, and vendor demos. In addition, Natural Grocers will hold sweepstakes on opening day, in which nine customers will win $10 to $100 gift cards for six months. The first 100 customers will also receive a free gift bag with a breakfast recipe and ingredients.
