The Raleigh area has opened new grocery stores in the past few years. From Florida grocer Publix to New York’s Wegmans, each has unique offerings that make it an attractive choice for residents.
Walmart has long been the top grocery destination in the Triangle, but it’s now losing market share to Harris Teeter. That’s according to April 2022 sales-tracking firm Chain Store Guide report.

Harris Teeter
If you’re a North Carolina shopper, no grocery store can compete with Harris Teeter. This chain is based in The Tar Heel State and has kept loyal shoppers happy with the most legit prepared foods, free cookies, and an awesome dragon mascot.
Harris Teeter is also known for its commitment to its local communities. It’s a major supporter of local charities and contributes millions of dollars to schools through its Together in Education program.
The Butcher’s Market
The Butcher’s Market is a great place to buy fresh meat. The store sells antibiotic-free beef vetted by strict Premium Beef certification processes and humanely raised pork and free-ranged organic poultry.
Unlike supermarkets, butcher shops know where their meat came from, how it was slaughtered, and the quality. This ensures that customers get the highest quality products possible and helps support local farmers in their communities.
In addition to the meats, the market sells prepared foods and other grocery items. General manager Jeff Gregory told me the market has 70 or 80 locally sourced products, from beer and wine to chips and sauces.
Fresh Market
Fresh Market is a specialty grocery store that inspires guests to make everyday eating extraordinary. With exceptional meat & seafood, premium fresh produce, signature baked goods, and carefully curated organics, each department provides inspiration and easy meal solutions to satisfy every palate.
The Fresh Market is under new management from Apollo Global Management, and the first major initiative is an overhaul of its brand, prices, and product offerings. The company said the changes would debut on October 26 at three stores in the Triangle area and expand to 13 more by November 30.
Aldi
Aldi is one of the best grocery stores for people who love to save money. It’s also a great place to find various items, including fresh produce and delicious meat.
The German grocer has increased in the United States, with more than 1,800 stores across 35 states. It’s on track to become the third-largest supermarket chain by 2022.
Its prices are often lower than those at Walmart. It sells fewer products than traditional supermarkets, allowing the company to cut costs. It also uses a “double guarantee” policy to ensure customers are satisfied with their purchases.
Lowe’s
Founded in 1954 as a single store in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, Lowe’s Food Stores is now a chain of more than 110 supermarkets. Its stores offer traditional supermarket fare and also sell body care products, beer and wines, kitchenware, paper and plastic products, and pet supplies.
Among other benefits, Lowe’s offers six paid holidays and allows employees to accrue up to four floating holidays. Additionally, the company provides health and dental insurance.
In addition, the company’s employee relief fund is available to help employees financially if they experience unexpected expenses such as house fires or funeral costs. This fund is matched dollar for dollar by Lowe’s.
Whole Foods
Whole Foods Market is an eco-minded grocery store specializing in natural and organic products. It offers a lot of fresh produce, meat, and other goods.
It also has a deli, bakery, hot bar, and coffee bar.
The store also sells organic and sustainably produced housewares, dry goods, beauty, and other items. It also carries beer and wine.
