What is Yahoo Used For?

Yahoo is one of the world’s premier Internet services, boasting many unique features not found elsewhere, such as free e-mail accounts and customizable homepages.

Yahoo has long been known for its minimalist design that embodies the characteristics of online media, yet this simplistic style may no longer keep up with its explosive growth.

1. Search Engine

Yahoo was one of the pioneers to introduce search engines on the internet, and it proved very successful initially; however, Google eventually came into prominence and gained more market share than Yahoo ever could.

The home page of this website features too much information for some, causing it to appear somewhat chaotic and disorienting for visitors. Furthermore, its load times tend to be slower than other websites.

Yahoo is a multi-product company centered on search, its primary offering. Established in 1994 by Stanford University graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo, Yahoo is currently owned by Verizon and boasts its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo stands for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle,” making it one of the most-visited web portals.

2. Email

Yahoo offers email services in 21 languages, featuring unlimited message storage capacity, contact lists, and customized email. In addition to email, there’s chat, text messaging, and mobile access for smartphones and PDAs equipped with the Internet.

Yahoo has taken an approach that embraces the Web rather than fighting against it, leading them to design something less flashy than Gmail, but that still gets the job done well.

Yahoo was founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo, graduate students at Stanford University 1994, and now boasts over one billion accounts worldwide. Verizon Communications acquired it in 2017 but continues running its core search and email businesses, utilities, and informational pages such as Yahoo News, Weather, Movies, etc.

3. News

Yahoo News is an aggregate news aggregator, compiling articles from multiple sources, including the Associated Press (AP), USA Today (USA Today), TIME magazine, Fox News and Politico. Users can personalize their news feed to focus on specific topics or sources.

Service is free, and add-ons can further extend its usefulness. One of the oldest web services remains widely popular.

Yahoo was established in 1995 by graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo from Stanford University. Over time, it grew into one of the world’s largest websites until Verizon purchased it in 2017. Yahoo made headlines in 2021 for introducing an email interface featuring a minimalist aesthetic; additionally, critics called out its response to a cyber attack in 2014 that compromised 500 million accounts.

4. Shopping

Yahoo is a web search engine offering various services, such as news, videos, images, recipes, weather forecasting, and shopping. Their homepage displays trending searches under “Trending Now.”

Yahoo was initially developed as an index of Web sites by Jerry Yang Chih-Yuan and David Filo, graduate students from Stanford University in California. Their name for their service derives from Houyhnhnms and Yahoos in Jonathan Swift’s novel Gulliver’s Travels.

Start small if you plan on opening an eCommerce store on Yahoo. Choose a catalog that allows for swift customer delivery; Yahoo also comes equipped with multiple store management features to support your business, as well as various payment gateways that support it.

5. Maps

Yahoo Maps is an innovative Flash application that works with browser “back” buttons to provide seamless back navigation & can be embedded on websites via Flash or AJAX technology. They also provide an API for developers looking to integrate maps into their applications.

Navteq, Tele Atlas & public domain sources provide mapping data. There is plenty of detail, such as road networks, major roads/freeways, cities, parks & forests – and multiple ways to zoom into/out of this map, including scrolling, dragging & keyboard keys.

Yahoo’s mapping product lacked innovation, focus, and practicality; Google Maps sought to assert itself and keep up with user demands by offering driving directions, route planners, and providing different map types & location details.
